Eastminster Free Store

A small group at NHPC has partnered with our “sister church”, Eastminster Presbyterian in Richmond, VA to open a Free Store. This partnership is designed to reach people who may not yet know Christ and have minimal means. This is accomplished by providing essential items such as toilet paper, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and laundry detergent which are donated by members from both churches. Our prayer is that over time relationships will develop with the local people who are invited to the store and that at some point they will feel comfortable enough to begin worshiping at Eastminster.

Good Samaritan Ministries

Provides Christian education, work programs, housing and other assistance. Their motto is "a hand up, not a hand out". New Hanover supports Good Samaritan Ministries, and we help out each Thanksgiving with "Operation Drumstick", providing Thanksgiving dinner to needy families.

Gulf Coast Disaster Relief

Since the devastating hurricanes in the Gulf coast area in 2005, New Hanover has had 6 mission trips to the area, has monetarily supported disaster relief through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, and has been able to provide support to individual churches in Mississippi and Louisiana. New Hanover is so committed to this project that we will provide 2 mission teams per year for the next three years.

MCEF (Mechanicsville Churches Emergency Fund)

MCEF is a consortium of local churches which stocks various pantries with food, clothing, medicine, and household items to meet the needs of those in the Mechanicsville area in times of crisis.

MOPS - Mothers of Preschoolers

The mission of MOPS is to encourage, equip, and develop every mother of preschoolers to realize her potential as a woman, mother, and leader in the name of Jesus Christ.

New Hanover hosts a daytime and evening MOPS.

Richmond Metro Work Camp

Richmond Metro Work Camp, Inc. is an interdenominational Christian mission program where youths and adults come from all over the region to help do minor repairs on homes of elderly and needy area residents.

Upward Sports

Upward Programs are an evangelistic sports ministry designed to promote community outreach, develop volunteer leadership, and share the love of Christ with children and their families. Upward Sports is a ministry of Upward Unlimited, a national organization that partners with churches to change the face of youth sports by promoting salvation, character and self-esteem. Their mission is to do "whatever it takes to recognize that 'Every Child Is a Winner.'" In an Upward league, the emphasis is on ministry and the life of the child first, while also running a first class sports league.

New Hanover Presbyterian Church has teamed up with other local churches to provide Upward football and Soccer leagues, and this is an exciting and growing ministry at New Hanover! Go to our main page hosted at Cool Spring Baptist Church, for additional information.

International Missionaries and Mission Trips

Africa

Jim and Ann Miller - Nairobi, Kenya

Jim and Ann Miller serve as missionary faculty with two institutions in Nairobi, Kenya: Daystar University and the Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology (NEGST). Their main missionary focus is on a much-needed program in Christian education in Africa.

Asia

Asian Access - China

Asian Access is an interdenominational, evangelical mission agency that is developing leaders and multiplying churches across Asia. Missionaries from Asian Access that New Hanover supports are focusing on training key leaders to lead the church with vision, character and competence... and our prayerful hope is that God uses these leaders to launch a church multiplication movement.

Costa Rica

Church of the Divine Savior in Calle Bancos, Costa Rica
For the past 5 years, New Hanover has sent a team to work at the Church of the Divine Savior in Calle Bancos, Costa Rica, where Irene Foulkes is our contact. Our mission there this past year construction was to complete the 2nd floor project at the church, which, among other things, provides a safe place for victims of domestic violence.

Rodriguo Cascante - Pavas, Costa Rica
This year, New Hanover began supporting Rodriguo Cascante, who is a missionary serving a church in Pavas, Costa Rica. This church has a food program that feeds the hungry.

Haiti

Rodney and Sharyn Babe, Comprehensive Development Project (CODEP) - Haiti
Much of our financial contribution to PC(USA) is designated to support Haiti Fund Inc.'s Comprehensive Development Program (CODEP), directed by Rodney and Sharyn Babe. The program has several efforts which include watershed rehabilitation, economic development, education programs, and health initiatives. Almost every year for the past 17 years, NHPC members have participated in annual mission trips to work with this exciting team!

Leon Dorleans, Haiti Outreach Ministries
New Hanover supports Leon Dorleans of Haiti Outreach Ministries, whose work reaches hundreds of people in Cite Soleil, the poorest area of Port-au-Prince. The people's unmet needs are education, affordable medical care, nutrition, vocational training that can lead to employment, and to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ. He and his wife Jacky run an outreach program focusing on those needs.

Latvia

Dennis and Betty Sink
Campus Crusade for Christ
We help support the ministry of Dennis Sink (our “home grown” Missionary from New Hanover!) who is a missionary in Riga, Latvia. Dennis works there for Campus Crusade for Christ, to fulfill the Great Commission in Latvia. His work is in many different levels of society, but his ministry particularly focuses on the development and growth of influential Latvian Christians. Workplace ministry is a specific focus, since it is the number one place where Christians interact in a meaningful way with non-Christians. As such, it is a place where Christians can grow in their faith and lead others to Christ. Dennis does so much more in addition to his primary ministry, as you can see by the next item, below!

Family Focused Mission Trips to Latvia
Last year (2005), 20 people from New Hanover participated in our first “family focused” Mission trip to Latvia, where we worked with Dennis Sink and partnered with Hope for You International and held a camp for 65 disadvantaged children. This summer (2006), we sent 34 people from New Hanover to Latvia to work with over 120 children!
